Estranged tech entrepreneur Ryan Black returns to his desert hometown for his father’s funeral where he’s reluctantly reunited with his ex-con brother. But when the pair become the target of an extortion scam at the hands of desperate criminal associates of their father, Ryan is forced to resort to extreme measures, exposing the town’s dark secrets.

LOCUSTS is a gritty outback genre film shot in Broken Hill Australia in July 2018, where the likes of Mad Max 2 and Wake In Fright were filmed. The film was written, produced and financed by Angus Watts after 5 years of development, and directed by Heath Davis on his 3rd feature film outing. The award-winning script is set in a fictional post mining boom town stricken by unemployment, sickness and desperation following the exodus of the mining companies.

The story explores the homecoming of protagonist Ryan Black, a failed tech entrepreneur, to his struggling hometown, where after re-connecting with his ex-Con brother he is blackmailed by a gang of desperate criminal associates of his father, and forced to extreme measures, which exposed the town’s dark secrets. The estranged protagonist is now very much a fish-out-of-water in his hometown, which has deteriorated into a dangerous, dystopian dog-eat-dog world.

The filmmakers set out to create a genre film paying homage to the classic Oz-Spoitation genre pieces of the ‘70’s and ‘80’s against a backdrop of the stunning central Australian desert.

Locusts was shot by award-winning cinematographer Chris Bland on ARRI mini, with a score from Golden Globe-winner Burkhard Dallwitz (The Truman Show) and editing by dual AACTA nominated editor Scott Gray and Romain Mongin.

The film has a strong all-Australian cast of well-established character actors and is the final screen appearance of triple AACTA nominated actor Damian Hill.
