The Group (Balagam)
In a village nestled in Telangana, India, resides an elderly man named Komurayya. Known for his cheerful demeanor, he awakens each morning with the sun, offering warm greetings to all he encounters before setting out to tend to his farm. Komurayya shares his life with three children – two sons, Aillaya and Mogilayya, and a daughter named Lakshmi. However, the dynamics within his family have undergone a profound transformation.
His grandson, Saayilu, a bright yet self-centered individual, decides to enter into marriage with the hope of clearing his debts through the dowry he anticipates receiving. Tragically, Komurayya’s passing occurs just before the engagement, altering the trajectory of both his life and the lives of his family members. In the wake of this loss, hidden secrets and unresolved conflicts emerge, unsettling the family and bringing forgotten matters to light.
During the post-funeral pinda ritual, a solemn ceremony attended by the entire village where rice balls are offered to honor the departed soul, an unsettling revelation takes place. The crows, traditionally believed to carry the spirits of the departed, refuse to partake in the offerings, signifying Komurayya’s soul’s dissatisfaction. Now, the pressing question arises: will the family confront their differences, decipher the wishes of the departed patriarch, and ultimately bring solace to the unsettled spirit?
